NFL Football Sheets
2003-2004
The 2003-2004 NFL Football Sheets season was quite a remarkable one to say the least. At the time, it was by far the closest race for the title we have ever seen, with the 5 competitors finishing within 4 games of each other. It was also one of the greatest comebacks in NFLFS history.
One of the largest fields in NFLFS history was set, 11 players all vying for the coveted Dan Marino Award, but only one could win it. The pack remained relatively close through out the first several weeks with rookie stud Eric Mayan and long time veteran Jerry Mayan on top of the leader boards. That soon changed after Dale Hamilton's huge 13-1 record in Week 6 boosted him to the top, giving him a 5 game cushion on Eric Mayan. At this point, the eventual winner, Jake Mayan was a whopping 11 games out of first place. Dale held on to his first place lead until week 10, when the 2002-2003 champion, and only two-time champion at the time, James Mayan came even with him. Week 10 was also the first ever edition of the popular news article, "The Monthly". This particular edition of "The Monthly" headlined the rookie race between Kevin Hamilton and Eric Mayan . Only one game separated them, and both of them were in contention to win the title (which at the time had never been done by a rookie). Other rookies, Mike and father Bruce Spencer were falling out of contention. This edition of "The Monthly" also featured the "Tre vs. NFL Football Sheets" saga. Tre Roach failed to get in his Week 9 sheet in on time. This resulted in "option 1" which gave him his overall average of wins per week, which in this particular case was 7. Today, the ruling states if a participant does not turn their sheet in on time they receive 0 wins for that week.
The race for the DMA still remained close, heading into the playoffs, Jake was at 163 wins, James was at 162, Kathi was at 161, and Dale and Kevin were tied at 160. Ultimately, Jake Mayan completed his comeback with a stellar post-season performance and won the 2003-2004 DMA. He became the youngest to ever win the title. Kevin Hamilton won the Rookie of the Year honors. The Final Standings read:
